All Smiles In First Grade...Toothy Smiles That Is!

Wow! Another week has passed in 1st grade! I can't believe how fast this semester is flying by! Before you know it, spring break will be here! Yay!!! :o)

This week in Mrs. Owens's class we have been learning more about healthy dental hygiene and how to take care of our teeth. We ended the week by making a health "toothy smile" snack that the kids LOVED! A big THANK YOU to the parents who helped provide the ingredients for our "smiles." Enjoy the pictures below of the students!

Another part of our day that I wanted to share with you was our "Book & Cooks." We don't have "Book & Cooks" everyday, but it is usually the culmination of something we have been learning. A "Book & Cook" is theme based and we "cook" a snack to go along with the theme. For example, last month we had been talking extensively about wintry tales and weather so we had a hot chocolate "Book & Cook." Usually the "Book & Cook" just consists of several simple ingredients we give the students to "cook" or mix together for the finished product. For this month's "Book & Cook", we made butterflies as we had been reading about the life cycle of butterflies during shared reading. The butterflies were made of peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, licorice, grapes, and celery. A huge THANK YOU to Abigail's mom for helping provide the ingredients! I don't know if you can tell, but we love to snack! :o) These were a big hit and the kids ALL wanted their picture taken with their butterflies. They were all wonderful!

A finished product!

First Grade Fun!

Greetings from Mrs. Owens's room! Since my arrival in January, I have spent lots of time getting to know each student in the class. I have grown to love them all and I can't wait to see what the next few weeks have in store for us as I continue to take over teaching. My idea behind creating this blog was to show each of you what your child is doing in first grade!

This week we celebrated Valentine's Day on Tuesday with a light snack at the end of the day. A BIG thank you to all who helped provide for our celebration! The kids had a BLAST as you can see below!

We have also begun our unit on health and nutrition. This is a great unit for the students because they are all beginning to loose teeth and they LOVE to talk about it! We learned this week about how to properly brush and floss our teeth as well as what types of foods are better for our teeth. Next week we will learn more about teeth and begin focusing on nutrition.

 Abigail practicing her flossing skills!

Christopher enjoying our mouth model!

On another note, I wanted to begin to show you parts of our day. You will see pictures below of the students during literacy centers, which is a 45 minute block in our day where the students spend time reading, writing, and working with words. Mrs. Owens has done a fabulous job of creating the different centers - the students are so excited to spend time in literacy centers everyday!

Caleb, Gavin, & Gracie independently reading.

Hayley and Lillie enjoying a good book in the listening center.

Aliyah is creating sentences using the word tiles.

Peyton is having a blast making words with this word work puzzle!

Will reads quietly during literacy centers.

Thomas is in the reading tent today!

Benjamin brainstorming marvelous stories in creative writing!
Have a great week!

*Look for new posts every week*

If you have not already done so, please return the release so I can include your child on this blog.
I cannot mention their name or post a picture until I have your signature on the form!
